Screentime is often parents and caregiver’s biggest concern. It’s also, for many experienced unschooling families, the best learning tool available.
If you are just starting out or feeling frustrated or concerned, there are many ways you can approach screentime with deliberate understanding and collaboration in order to support your child and give yourself a break.
If you have had screen limits, take it slow. “Say yes more”: yes to a few more minutes, to one more level, to finishing this round, to bringing a tablet on an outing. Adjust slowly and observe. Pay attention and play with your kid, or watch with your kid, so that you can learn and have fun too!
If you’ve dropped limits and feel anxious, or feel like your kid is struggling with self-care because of screentime use, we recommend researching sensory integration.
If your child isn’t leaving their room, they may be in autistic burnout or cocooning in order to heal from school trauma. If you are concerned about depression, please seek professional mental health advice.
